The Orokonui Challenge on 10 October 2026 is an 21.8km mixed-terrain run based from the Orokonui Ecosanctuary in Waitati, Dunedin.
The course starts near the Visitor centre carpark then runs along part of the Orokonui fence line, down the coastal connection cycleway, out to Doctor’s Point beach, back and around the Orokonui lagoon, and into the sanctuary to finish with a climb through the sanctuary’s protected forest.
Terrain varies from compacted gravel, grass, beach, asphalt and coarse gravel. The route contains around 600m of elevation change.
All participants can feel a sense of achievement not only for completing the challenge but supporting biodiversity, with all proceeds going towards Orokonui's important mahi in wildlife advocacy and conservation.
