The Orokonui Challenge on 19 October 2025 is an 18.7km mixed terrain run based from the Orokonui Ecosanctuary in Waitati, Dunedin.

The course starts near the visitor centre carpark then runs along part of the Orokonui fence line, over the side of Mōpanui, along the coast from Pūrākaunui to Doctors Point, past the Orokonui inlet, and into the sanctuary to finish with a climb through the sanctuaries protected forest. The terrain varies from compacted gravel, grass, beach, asphalt and coarse gravel. The route contains around 600m of elevation change.

All participants can feel a sense of achievement not only for completing the challenge but supporting biodiversity, with all proceeds going towards Orokonui's important mahi in wildlife advocacy and conservation.
