The last weekly newsletter for 2018 has interesting articles, and the late addition of an extra pre-Christmas run in the YMCA Auckland Domain 10K Series. The weekly newsletter will return on 15 January.

Interesting articles

You don't have to super-size your ultras
Sarah Lavender Smith writes "in this era of 200-is-the-new-100, it feels almost inevitable that many runners and race directors will super-size perfectly good and satisfying ultra routes, and we ultrarunners will feel compelled to choose the longer option or feel slightly guilty or less accomplished if we take the shorter route." I completely agree with this, and also that you shouldn't feel you need to run further than you're comfortable at any event, be it an ultra, a marathon, a half marathon or even a 10K. Foot fixer: 5 things you can do for healthier feet
Trail Runner Magazine has a list of 5 exercises you can do to help decrease the chances of injury: roll out; big toe extension stretch; big toe isolation; allow your toes to spread; and balance on one foot. Check out all the details here.

Afghan women find freedom in running
The all-female Free to Run group hits the Kabul's trails and parks several times a week, braving disapproving looks, verbal abuse and even physical violence to enjoy the rare pleasure of exercising outdoors. Find out more in this article at Yahoo News.

70 year old sets world age group record for marathon
Gene Dykes of Pennsylvania recently broke Ed Whitlock's famous mark, running a marathon in 2:54:23. 'My first thought was that this really frees up my schedule for next year," he said, now he doesn't need to keep chasing Ed's mark! Find out more in this article at Runners World.
