This week's newsletter has interesting articles, postponement of the Red Beach Open Water Swim and late additions of the Lincoln Road Runners Tuesday Night Run, Race to the Brewery and Matiu/Somes Island Swim.
Ultramarathon runners bring joy
Last weekend was the annual Tarawera Ultra Marathon, which saw the introduction of a new 100 mile event and also the course for the other distances change direction so they ran from Kawerau to Rotorua. David Beck writes: "If you are feeling down in the dumps this time next year, go and spend some time at the Tarawera Ultramarathon finish line" in this article in the NZ Herald. It is truly inspirational watching people finish such a mammoth undertaking, especially those at the very end of the race, some having been on their feet for almost 36 hours.
Coastal Challenge Blog
TotalSport's annual Coastal Challenge is on this Saturday, and I found a bunch of interesting and useful articles for people participating on their blog. There's the somewhat amusing story about how the event came to being in the first place, some swimming tips if you're doing the longer distances, tips for training and suggestions for which distance you should do. I've entered the 22km Mid Monty - I love coastal running but this will the first time I've ever participated in this particular event.
Robertsons added to Commonwealth Games team
Both Jake and Zane Robertson have been added to the athletics team for the Gold Coast Commonwealth Games. This will be the second Commonwealth Games for both, having competed at the 2014 Games, where Zane won a bronze medal in the men's 5000m and Jake finished ninth after being involved in a fall in the final laps of the race. 6 mental games to keep yourself entertained during a long run
Sometimes a killer playlist just isn't enough to keep you entertained (or distracted!) during a long run, so Runners World has six suggestions to keep yourself entertained. I really like the naming dogs one (and it can be used for so many other things), and while I appreciate the solving long division problems, I think I'll just stick with the simple trying to work out my pace and finish time maths that I so often do myself!
To find out what's been recently updated, check the recent updates page regularly. I include in this newsletter a list of the more important updates (see below) such as date changes, cancellations, or late additions to the calendar. And check out the full calendar of upcoming events.
- Red Beach Open Water Swim was postponed from 11 February (last Sunday) to 25 March
That's all for this week; have a great running week!
