The Lake Hayes Triathlon is New Zealand's oldest surviving triathlon, first held in 1983, and is currently held twice annually at Christmas & Easter. The event on Wednesday, 27 December 2017 includes a triathlon variant with kayaking instead of swimming, long and short duathlons, and standalone trail running events.
The duathlon, triathon & multisport can completed individually, or as part of a team of 2 to 3 people. This triathlon has been a cornerstone of much larger events in the New Zealand triathlon calendar, in the past doubling as the New Zealand national championships, the Oceania Championships, and the World Championships.
