The Lake Hayes Triathlon on Friday, 27 December 2019 is New Zealand's oldest surviving triathlon, first held in 1983, and is currently held twice annually at Christmas & Easter.
The Christmas event is held over the Christmas holiday break each year and has fostered the growth of summer triathlon over the years. Its history is made more remarkable by the calibre of entrants that have gone on to become household names in the sport all over the world.
This triathlon has been a cornerstone of much larger events in the New Zealand triathlon calendar, in the past doubling as the New Zealand national championships, the Oceania Championships, and the World Championships.
