The Kaukau Skyline Traverse returns on 18 April 2026 with the 2026 event hosting the New Zealand and Wellington Mountain Running Championships.​

The races take place on the western hills of Johnsonville, along the Skyline Track over Mt Kaukau. Races start and finish at the northern end of the Skyline Track and head south along the ridgeline to Mt Kaukau and beyond.

There are 4 distances, with all races on ‘out and back’ routes with a turn-around point. The long course includes an additional challenging loop (clockwise) before turning around.

Everyone is welcome to enter and run in any race, these are open to all runners, club and non-club runners alike.

Championship runners must be registered with a Wellington club, wear their club uniform and run in the correct race according to their age grade.

Distances/Events

Sprint course: 1.75K / ~ 70m ascent
Short course: 5.75K / ~ 220m ascent
Medium course: 8.75K / ~ 400m ascent
Long course: 12.15K / ~ 600m ascent

Location map

Race Headquarters is Waiora Hub. The start/finish area is ~1.8km from HQ on the small reserve between the ends of McLintock Street and Carmichael Street.
