The inaugural Backyard Ultra Wānaka starts on 27 February 2027, based at Outlet Camp Wanaka.

The event follows standard BYU rules, with participants running a 'yard' 6.7km lap, every hour on the hour, until there is one person remaining. All others are technically a DNF.

The course is a variation of well drained & tidy moraine and wide Central Otago trail, with gentle gradients. It is forested and offers wild views.
