This week's newsletter has interesting articles, postponement of The Bay of Islands BEAST, a date change for the Kaitaia Run/Walk and date correction for the IRONMAN New Zealand Kids Fun Run.

Interesting articles

Kiwi Greig Hamilton's incredible effort at Barkley Marathons
The race that "eats it young" had no finishers for a second year in a row, but Kiwi Greig Hamilton was one of only two athletes to start the fourth of five laps before tapping out a short time later. Find out more in this article at the NZ Herald.

Training for a race with no end
The Barkley Martathons' founder, Lazarus Lake, also created another crazy endurance race called Big's Backyard Ultra. Vera Alves takes a look at the upcoming NZ version in this article at the NZ Herald. This is a one-lap-per-hour last-person-standing event, but there's also an associated relay event for the more sane amongst us (note: I'm doing the crazy last-person-standing version!)

8 ways to extend your long run endurance
Runners World takes a look at ways to extend your long run endurance in this article, which includes slowing your pace, doing one long run per week and taking walking breaks.

Why you should be skeptical about your wrist-based heart rate
A lot of running watches these days come with heart rate monitors that either work from a strap worn on your chest, or using a wrist based LED. Coach David Roche takes a look at how both work and the possible inaccuracies when using a wrist-based monitor in this article at Trail Runner Magazine.

- The Bay of Islands BEAST scheduled for 5 July has had to be postponed to late August (date TBC) to a new location due to a change in land ownership of the location that was to have been used

Date changes/corrections
- Kaitaia Run/Walk has moved from 11 to 4 August
- IRONMAN New Zealand Kids Fun Run is on 6 March, not the 7th as originally listed
