The 63rd annual Kawerau King of the Mountain is an approximately 8km run up and down Putauaki (Mt Edgecumbe) in Kawerau on Saturday, 27 October 2018, organised in partnership by the Kawerau Harrier Club & Kawerau District Council.

It was established in 1955 as a friendly wager between a local Kiwi and Australian; to determine who could reach the summit of Putauaki and back the fastest. Of course it was the Kiwi (Jim Chadwick) who won the first duel and the event has been ingrained with legend since its humble beginnings.

It should not be underestimated the gruelling nature of this extremely steep climb up (and descent) of Putauaki.

A Trans-Trasman Challenge still remains to the present day, with the sister race in Pomona, Sunshine Coast, which adds a whole new dynamic to the competition.
