The Shoe Clinic Bell Hill Challenge is an off road 18km run or 12km walk at Belldoon Farm in the Selwyn Plantation Block, approx 60k west of Christchurch, and is organised by Avalanche Peak Incorporated. This event replaces the Flagpole Run Up from 2010 and earlier.
At 960m high, Bell Hill summit can be seen from every angle in the surrounding region and once on top the view stretches for more than 30 kilometres in all directions. Situated close to the West Coast Road, it was used as a landmark when travellers blazed a trail from Canterbury toward the West Coast.
These events head up to Bell Hill summit, before continuing on a loop on tussock ridges and forestry tracks above the Selwyn River back blocks. The course is steep in places, taking in farm land, 4WD drive tracks and single-track.
The official website driving directions to the start/finish are as follows: take the Main West Coast Road from Christchurch toward Springfield. Approx 3k past Sheffield (6k before Springfield) turn left into Dalethorpe Road. Follow Dalethorpe Road for approx 10k south/west to Belldoon Farm. Follow signs to start/finish area.
This is shown very approximately in the map below - it will be in the general area of the marker point.
